Australian design studio Gibson Karlo has developed a metal edition of its Twill chair for furniture brand Design By Them. The new model retains the deliberately soft-looking form that defined the earlier timber version.
Designers Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis drew on the familiar appearance of a newly opened pack of plasticine when creating the original chair. That reference gives Twill its rounded, moulded visual language, despite its more durable structural material.
The all-metal iteration extends the chair family without abandoning its central design idea: a seat that appears pliable and hand-shaped rather than rigid or overtly industrial. The material change places greater focus on the contrast between the chair’s tactile-looking silhouette and its metal construction.
For architecture and interior projects, furniture with a clear material identity can help define the character of communal, hospitality and residential spaces. Twill’s latest version presents a sculptural seating option whose visual softness is carried across from timber to metal.
The chair was presented through Dezeen Showroom, which identified it as an all-metal development of Gibson Karlo’s earlier design for Design By Them.
